About…

I’ve been teaching EFL since 1991, most of that time in Barcelona, Spain. I work at the Escola d’Idiomes Moderns (EIM) at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), as a teacher, CELTA trainer and head of Teacher Training and Development.

After graduating in French, Spanish and Linguistics, I did what was then the ‘RSA Certificate’ and got my first job in Schio, Italy. My love of Barcelona brought me back here in time for the Olympics. I did the DipTEFLA at IH Barcelona in 1993-4, with tutors Neil Forrest and Scott Thornbury.

I started in my present school in 1995. I did an MA and a PhD in Applied Linguistics at the UB, while continuing to work full time! My research focused on the practical application of Dörnyei’s L2 Motivational Self System in an EFL classroom. I’ve published chapters in SLA compilations, articles in peer-reviewed journals and EFL teachers’ magazines (see Presentations and Publications page). I am co-editor of the IATEFL Research SIG newsletter as well as co-editing a publication based on the ELT Research in Action (ELTRIA) conference. The publications are free to download: 2018, 2020 and 2022

I try to present at conferences whenever I can. These include teachers’ conferences like the (sadly missed) IH ELT conference and IATEFL and academic conferences such as TBLT and EuroSLA. I am also co-organiser of the ELT Research in Action (ELTRIA) conference, which is held every two years in Barcelona.

I also blog at EIM-UB Teacher Development: a compilation of summaries of lectures, workshops and conference presentations which I think might be useful for EFL teachers.
